Follow the world chapmpion’s cycling route in Costa Cálida

Keen tourists can follow the same routes of a newly-crowned world champion with a cycling holiday in Murcia.

Alejandro Valverde – who hails from the small town of Las Lumbreras, just a few kilometres from downtown Murcia – sealed his first world championship title in Innsbruck, Austria last month, which meant he also landed the gold medal and the famous rainbow jersey.

Fellow Murcians then helped celebrated his success with a hero’s welcome in his home town a few days later as well-wishers lined the streets where he started cycling as a nine-year-old.

With cycling now a huge part of leisure and recreation for holidaymakers, the region of Murcia offers year round guided cycling breaks and training camps, which are designed for large or small groups with all levels of ability.

Valverde and his Movistar team-mates regularly use the routes around the regional park of Sierra Espuña, which covers 250km, has 20 mountain peaks above 1000m and also features in the famous Vuelta a España.

But with 12 recognised cycling and mountain biking tours to choose from, there is every reason for cyclists of all ages and abilities to enjoy the experience of pedal power in the breathtaking scenery of the Costa Cálida.

Among the most popular is with Espubike, which is a 146km mountain bike route through the Sierra Espuña, with a 4,300m ascent, and four sections, which means cyclists can tailor their route to suit their abilities.
