One of the largest collections of dinosaur material ever to tour the U.K. opens at Perth Museum and Art Gallery next month. And make no bones about it – the exhibition of solely British dinosaurs is a once-in-a-lifetime event.
The exclusive showing is an opportunity for visitors to get up close to some Jurassic-era items for the first time – all of them from the British Isles. Five years in the planning, the ground-breaking three-month exhibition is spread across three of Perth Museum’s galleries and features material from 17 museums, universities and collections, more than 20 species of dinosaurs and over 100 original fossils – many on public display for the first time.
Many of the items are touchable, including a 10 cm long Iguanodon tooth, a 20cm Megalosaurus jaw, a 30cm cast of a Baryonyx claw, and a 40 cm meteorite. With other exhibits ranging from giant skeletons to food, insects and fossilised poo, the collection has been carefully curated to show everything from dinosaurs’ diets to behaviour.
Britain’s Dinosaurs – Meet the Locals, running from March 17th to June 24th 2018, celebrates the more than 100 species of dinosaurs which were found here in the U.K. and Britain’s role in the Jurassic era. The first dinosaurs ever recognised and named by scientists were found in Britain almost 200 years ago.
Jenny Kinnear, Head of Museums and Collections at Culture Perth and Kinross, which runs Perth Museum and Art Gallery, said:
“Britain is an important player in Jurassic-era history and archaeology, with more than 100 species of dinosaurs found around the U.K. But most were locked in museum basements and never seen by the public. That’s why it’s so exciting to have this collection under one roof.
“Together, the materials weigh almost 10 tonnes and are spread over three of our galleries at Perth Museum. While it runs, this will be largest gallery of dinosaur exhibits on the UK mainland outside of London. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition and we know it will be a great hit during the Easter holidays and into the summer, and another reason why Perth Museum is a significant attraction in Scotland.”
Britain’s Dinosaurs is another coup for Perth Museum and Art Gallery, which is the first gallery to be showing the current Arts Council Collection exhibition On Paper, featuring some of the biggest names in modern art.
Perth Museum and Gallery will undergo redevelopment in 2019 as part of Perth’s Capital Project Development, which includes the City hall development.
