BBC DRAMA SERIES FILMS IN ZAGREB

Mirogoj Cemetery

The Croatian capital, Zagreb is no newcomer to the international film and television arena. For decades, Zagreb has featured in films and programmes often playing the “double” of a city or country.

The new big budget BBC television series “McMafia” started filming in Zagreb in early November and will continue shooting until December.

This new epic TV drama focuses on the complex world of organised crime including the Russian mafia. Starring British actor James Norton in the lead role, the eight-part drama will be broadcast in 2017 and is expected to have a Sunday evening schedule slot at 9pm. The series is based on Misha Glenny’s bestselling book about organised crime.

Filming in the Croatian capital is taking place in the awesome Mirogoj Cemetery, near St Mark’s Church in Upper Town, and near the famous Stone Gate and in Strossmayer Square.

Zagreb’s appearances in previous silver screen movies have included Fiddler on the Roof where Zagreb doubled for St Petersburg and Sophie’s Choice where Zagreb played various cities in Poland.

Other greats have included The Hunting Party, Night of the Fox and TV series The Dirty Dozen and Winds of War.

When visitors step out among the streets, squares and parks of Zagreb, they could well be walking in the footsteps of Richard Gere, Omar Sharif, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford, John Mills …and more.

From April 2017, Croatia Airlines, British Airways and Monarch Airlines fly from London to Zagreb, flight time is just two hours. Monarch will also fly from Manchester.

Special fare on the new Monarch flight from London Gatwick departing on 28th April is from £103 return.
