Paris undergoes a transformation with the approach of the festive season. The city’s most beautiful monuments are illuminated, Christmas decorations adorn the streets, and department store windows are filled with animated displays.
Markets, Nativity scenes, open-air ice rinks, merry-go-rounds and a host of other activities and events take over the city, offering fun for all the family. Restaurants keep the festive spirit alive all the way into the New Year, with special menus for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve celebration.

Christmas markets in Paris

Traditional and popular Christmas markets are a major shopping event and are held from November onwards.

Originating in Germany and the Alsace, Christmas markets have spread throughout Europe since the 1990s. Little by little, they have become an essential festive event during the Christmas season in Paris. They are held all over the capital: in Montparnasse, on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées and in La Défense… and are a great success with passers-by.

These markets made up of wooden chalets create a warm and magical Christmassy atmosphere and are the perfect place to pick up Christmas decorations, festive objects, regional produce and arts & crafts … You will certainly find  decorations for your Christmas tree, some original ideas for Christmas presents and ingredients to make your Christmas meals even more delicious.

During the month of December, department stores extend their opening hours and open their doors on Sunday. These extended opening times are the perfect opportunity for doing your Christmas shopping and enjoying a family stroll past the delightful animated store window scenes!

Windows displays

Windows displays at the big department stores become veritable works of art, ever more inventive and surprising.

In keeping with tradition, the facades of Parisian department stores (Printemps Haussmann, Galeries Lafayette, BHV, Le Bon Marché) are adorned with the most stunning festive decorations. As well as street lights and decorations around the city, department store windows are filled with Christmas trees, darting fireflies and gift-wrapped parcels.

Shop windows also put on a show with amazing theatre sets featuring animated figures and magical decor in an interactive world … great fun to watch!

Enchanting universes, devised and created by gifted artists and designers, are still a source of wonder for both children and grown-ups.
