In summer, Bremen and Bremerhaven host a wide range of open-air events. Visitors and locals alike enjoy sitting under a parasol on the market square or on the harbour in the Havenwelten (Harbor Worlds) and the Shop Window Fishery Harbor, sipping a coffee and soaking up the atmosphere. Plays, open-air concerts, maritime festivals, cultural events, street circus and sports: a visit in the summer is anything but boring.

Summer is the season in the Shop Window Fishery Harbor in Bremerhaven. Every Thursday throughout the months of June, July and August you can enjoy a different band every Thursday on stage at the Bremerhaven Music Summer event. At 7pm the market square in the Shop Window Fishery Harbor becomes the meeting point of the region. The open-air concerts with tribute bands are free and a sure guarantee of fun summer evenings with good music, drinks or something delicious to eat – that’s what makes the summer fun.

Bremen’s La Strada street circus festival in June is a colourful and lively affair, showcasing the captivating and subtle art of circus entertainment. The squares around the town hall, the Roland statue and the Bremen Town Musicians statue are transformed into a giant circus ring. Street performers from all over the world come to Bremen and entertain and enthrall their audiences with spellbinding tricks and routines. With its fantastic line-up of acrobats and artistes, dancers and dreamers, mime artists and multi-talented performers, this summer open-air spectacle is one of the largest and most lavish of its kind and is popular outside Germany as well.

The Harbor Spectacle and Bremerhaven Matjes Hering Days is the official birthday of the Bremerhaven gourmet mile in the historic Shop Window Fishery Harbor and this year marks its 25th anniversary. Taking place from July 15-17, with music ranging from pop to polka, sports and games for children and families and naturally with the star of the weekend “Nieuwe Haring”, as the Dutch also call their matjes hering. The delicious fish will be hand filleted on original matjes hering carts and served. You can’t get any fresher. Visitors can also enjoy the 4th meeting of the US- Cars on Saturday July 16th on the “Waterkant”.

The Breminale at the Weserwiesen in Bremen is a free, open-air event in July. From a one-man band to bands known all over Germany, the various acts perform in red-and-white striped marquees, on boats and on the Weser beach. There is also plenty to enjoy away from the stage: street performers showing off their skills, actors delighting the crowd, stallholders selling their wares, and an impressive range of food and drink stalls. The Breminale is a cultural experience for young and old, with a special children’s area offering a host of exciting activities.

From August 19-21, 2016 the rare “flat-bottom” sail ships will visit Bremerhaven. The “flatboat” tradition is particularly maintained in the Netherlands, but also on the German North Sea coast. More than 30 traditional Wadden Sea sailboats are expected to the “Schippertage – meeting of the flatboats” event. Have a look at these special ships, enjoy the ship parade on the River Weser and the exciting complementing program on land.

On one late-August evening in Bremen, visitors flock to the beautifully-lit market square to enjoy the warm summer temperatures with a glass of wine from the Bremen Ratskeller. Eine große Nachtmusik is the motto for the evening, which marks the start of the Bremen Music Festival, a real highlight for fans of jazz and classical music. For around three weeks in late summer, internationally acclaimed musicians perform in this region between the Ems, Weser and Elbe rivers. The festival presents ambitious programmes, which often include rarely performed pieces – for many, a truly unforgettable experience.
