The beautiful Greek island of Crete is home to the busy and lively resort of Hersonissos, located just 25km from Heraklion airport on the north coast. It is situated between Heraklion and Stalis on the eastern side of Crete, a little further west from the well-known resort of Malia.

The resort was formed from what were a few small fishing villages and is now a vibrant holiday destination. It offers a lively mix of bars, tavernas, restaurants and shops close to the busy harbour area. There is something for couples, families and the young alike.

Crete enjoys a temperate climate of warm summers and mild winters, full of sunshine, making the destination a perfect year-round getaway. The island proudly boasts over three hundred and thirty days of sunshine per year. The temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees centigrade and the air is often humid. Most days are sunny from sunrise to sunset.

Holidays in Hersonissos are all about beach life – and with no less than three beaches to enjoy it’s easy to see why. For peace and quiet Limanakia beach is perfect; the main beach is great for families, with watersports galore to try, and don’t miss Star beach with its own water park with waterslides and bungee jumping.

If it’s a boat trip you’re after, head down to the port where you will find a few companies offering boat trips and glass bottom boat tours around the coastline of east Crete, or to Dia island.

During the day Hersonissos port is a nice place to relax and watch the world go by, and with fresh fish landed daily you can enjoy some great meals during the day or in the evening at many of the Tavernas.

Further inland there are some picturesque sights where the modern resort facilities of Hersonissos merge with the older parts of the village. The modern harbour and buildings of Hersonissos are built on the site where the Minoans built ancient Hersonissos. Nearby at Kastri there are remnants of an early Christian Basilica from the Roman period during which Hersonissos prospered and at Xerokamares you can see the ruins of the aqueduct that once irrigated the ancient city.

Whether you’re seeking a family holiday, a lively break with friends or a relaxing couples getaway, a holiday in Hersonissos has it all.
